“Take a trip back to the 1930s.”

I was recently invited to a food tasting session over at 1933 last week; 1933 being one of the recently opened eating establishments over at the newly renovated Capitol Piazza.  1933 is by the well-known & home-grown F&B brand that is The Breadtalk Group. The concept revolves around the 1930s, where both cultures & cuisine converged. 1933 offers a mixture of Southeast Asian meets Western cuisine, with familiar local favourites.

Aesthetic
1933’s decor relates back to the 1930s, with classic Peranankan-motif tile patterns at the counter/bar mixed with marble table tops & vintage rattan chairs. The restaurant is located along the Capitol Piazza, fitting right at home with the Neo-Classical architecture that is the Capitol Theatre.

Here's the second. There's a tad too many pages to the menu, hence I won't upload them all.

Food
As mentioned earlier, 1933’s eclectic menu consists of a mix of Asian & Western cuisine, bringing back the whole concept of the 1930s era. Aside from local favourites such as Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice & Nanyang Curry Chicken, 1933 also offers Western dishes such as Grilled Pork Loin & Golden Chicken Cordon Bleu. You’ll be able to sample two great cuisines at one simple location. Apart from their main dishes, you can also find a wide variety of signature milkshakes that is reminiscent of the 1930s Magnolia Snack Bar at Capitol.

Price
Perhaps one downside to 1933 is their prices, which is a fair representative of their location. Western mains go above the 20 dollar mark while the two local favourites remain below it. I’m fairly certain that there’s service fees & GST as well, considering it’s premium locale.

Berry Bliss Lemonade ($8) The scorching days over here calls for a quenching drink like this, hence I decided to give their Berry Bliss a try. (Perhaps I should have ordered a milkshake instead, seeing as how it's really popularized.) Nonetheless, it was a great drink that was cooling & thirst quenching. Each sip yield a decent amount of berry pieces.

Sawadee Greens Can't remember the price for this unfortunately. Anyway, it was quite interesting to see an inclusion of a Thai-style salad in the menu. It tasted really great though, both my friend & I liked it. The lime gave the salad a nice kick & added flavour, coupled with the minced meat & seafood.

1933 Power Carrot ($9.60) Essentially a carrot soup served in a bread bowl, the 1933 Power Carrot consists of a mixture of orange zest, carrots, onions, cream, ginger & butter which creates a velvety yet smooth textured soup. Full of bursting flavour, both my friend & I were quite impressed with this. The bread bowl is also baked freshly everyday by 1933 themselves.

Nanyang Curry Chicken ($14.90) One of the local favourites, the Nanyang Curry Chicken is also served in a crusty yet soft bread bowl. Kampong chicken is used for the curry, ensuring tender pieces of meat mixed with delectable coconut-based curry. The bread bowl was a perfect complement to the curry dish; just tear off a piece & dip it inside. Recommended. (My only gripe was that the chicken pieces were quite little.)

Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice ($16.80) Anyone & everyone who knows me, would probably get a shock to see me eat chicken rice. (I'm more of a Western foodie after all.) Nonetheless, 1933's chicken rice was quite superb with a fantastic quantity of chicken meat. The rice is cooked in a rich chicken broth to give it fragrance & flavour, while the kampong chickens are selected for their tender meat that has a reduced amount of oil. The entire dish definitely tasted really good, though I'm sure that if you're a local here, you'll be able to find this common dish at a lower price point.

The beautiful rack of pork is accompanied with a choice of Hainanese, black pepper or mushroom sauce. My friend & I combined the Hainanese and black pepper sauce, which surprisingly complemented each other well, giving the pork loin a burst of flavour. The dish is also served with a side of sauteed potatoes in olive oil. Recommended. (Though the price sticks out like a sore thumb.)

Gula Melaka Pandan Cake ($8.90) Ending off the meal, we were served a lovely soft pandan chiffon cake. At first, my friend & I looked at it with apprehension, thinking that the cake would turn out dry. We were dead wrong after taking a taste. The chiffon cake was simply divine as it was soft. You even get bits of palm sugar on the inside of the cake which brought this dessert to a whole new level. The Gula Melaka dip was to die for as well. I was pretty much blown away & in love with this dessert. Highly recommended!

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
The Breadtalk Group is definitely onto something with this whole concept of bringing back the 1930s. The food here is quite fantastic & a great nod to the local favourites while intermixing with Western cuisine. Their locale over at the Capitol Piazza perfectly complements their aesthetic & will be a great addition for the tourists around the area looking to try our local cuisine.

I do also want to thank The Influencer Network & 1933 for the invite & for being fantastic hosts for the food tasting event.
